As has been the case the past several years, teams from Northeast Kings Education Centre dominated the Western Region table tennis competition April 28 in Canning. NKEC, which hosted the competition, captured five of the six divisions.

The NKEC senior boys' team - Nathan Coffill, Daren Keizer and Sam Hendrix - and the senior girls' team - Jolene MacIntyre, Katherine Power and Mariel Bent - both ended up the class of the region in their respective divisions.

NKEC also swept the intermediate competition, with Todd Everett, Logan Coffill and Blake Brown winning the boys' division and Shanea Millett, Annie MacDuff and Mishelle Melvin placing first on the girls' side.

The NKEC junior girls' team of Dianna Huntley, Bethany Casey and Kayla Casey was the only team competing in their division and advanced to provincials automatically.

The Wolfville #1 team of Jacob Long, Cameron Hoyt and Devon Morine (Josh Thomas, the fourth member of the team, was unable to compete) won the junior boys' division, breaking the NKEC domination but still ensuring a Kings County sweep.

Wolfville #1's biggest challenge came from the Wolfville #2 team of Matt Hughes, Cochrane Noseworthy-Smith, Mitchell Carey and Ben Crisp; which went through the competition with just one loss, which came at the hands of their schoolmates.

Ten schools from the Western Region - Horton, NKEC, Middleton, Avon View, Kings-Edgehill, Wolfville, Maple Grove, South Queens, Liverpool and Park View - took part in the competition.

There were a total of 12 teams in senior boys’, nine in intermediate boys’, five in junior boys’, three in both senior and intermediate girls’ and one (NKEC) in junior girls’.

The top team in each division from each region advances to the NSSAF provincial championships May 12 at East Antigonish Academy.
