Four local boxers came home with medals from the recent Cadet National Boxing Championships Feb. 23 to March 1 in Edmonton.

Salene Best, Ty Pineo and Matt Whitford - all of the Evangeline Trail Amateur Boxing Club - all won gold in their respective weight classes; and Kelsey Salsman of the Berwick Boxing Club captured bronze.

Best won gold in the 52kg weight division, and was also named “best boxer’ in the championships. Pineo captured his gold medal in the 48kg division and Whitford won gold at 80kg.

ETABC head coach Bryan Gibson, also head coach of the Nova Scotia Canada Games boxing team, was very pleased with the results. He was especially encouraged by the results turned in by Pineo and Whitford, both vying for spots on the provincial Canada Games team.

Gibson was also pleased his wife, Terri-Ann, an accredited boxing judge; made the trip and served as a ringside official during the national competition.

In addition, ETABC assistant coach Steve Best, who accompanied the boxers to the competition, was in his daughter’s corner when she won her gold medal which, according to Gibson, “made it even more special.”

Salsman competed against the reigning champion, Laura-Lou Fortin, Quebec; who has over 60 bouts to Salsman’s 13. Salsman went all three rounds and performed to her potential for her first appearance at a national competition - “All we could ask of her, and we’re very proud,” said Berwick club coach Nancy Chittick.

There were a total of 213 boxers. Preliminary bouts were held at Ed's Rec Room in the West Edmonton Mall. Semi-finals and finals were held in the Fantasyland Main Hotel Ball Room. Nova Scotia won a total of seven gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

Next year the Junior and Youth Canadian National Amateur Boxing Championships will be held in Halifax. In 2011, Halifax will host the Canada Winter Games.
