Annapolis Valley athletes, coaches honoured with sports awards

ANNAPOLIS VALLEY - A number of Valley residents are being honoured by Sport Nova Scotia.

The winners of the provincial sport organizations’ top awards include Alpine Ski Nova Scotia’s coach of the year Nicole Gignac of Wolfville; Badminton Nova Scotia’s male individual athlete of the year Miklos Kanyasi of Wolfville; Basketball Nova Scotia’s female athlete of the year Jayda Veinot of Port Williams; Orienteering Association of Nova Scotia’s volunteer of the year Cheryl Smith of Coldbrook; Skate Nova Scotia’s male individual athlete of the year Alexandre Robert of Kingston; Squash Nova Scotia’s coach of the year Janet MacLeod of New Minas; and Volleyball Nova Scotia’s coach of the year Sherri Archibald of Aylesford.

In Annapolis County, Granville Ferry resident Brenda MacDonald was honoured as female athlete of the year for Alpine Ski Nova Scotia.

Windsor’s Ryan Alguide was also honoured as Rugby Nova Scotia’s official of the year, while Falmouth’s Mark Smith was recognized as Softball Nova Scotia’s coach of the year.

“These are our members’ top picks – so the best of the best in each sport,” said Jamie Ferguson, chief executive officer of Sport Nova Scotia, said in a press release.

In total, 184 athletes, volunteers and coaches, representing 39 different sports, will receive awards at a May 28 ceremony in Halifax.

The award winners are also in the running for the overall Ricoh Sports Award, which will be announced May 28.
