Rob Lindsay, the Leafs' assistant coach, said the fundraiser is now in its third year and will see upwards of 32 teams compete.

The goal is not only to raise money to help offset operating costs, but to raise awareness of the still relatively new club.

Lindsay said hockey players participate in the competition, as do local golfers and supporters of keeping Junior B hockey in Windsor.

“From our operating side of things, we try to operate lean. We're 100 per cent volunteer,” said Lindsay. “One of the funny jokes in my house is that I actually pay to coach. We're certainly vested in the organization and sometimes it takes out of your personal pocket to be able to keep the team running and going and that's what we do.”

Operating costs include things like ice rentals, referee rentals, league fees, equipment, and travel expenses.

“We try to operate as lean as we can, understanding that it's tight times for everybody.”

Several local businesses have stepped up to the plate over the past few seasons to help keep the team going.

“We also get the community support from local businesses that we can leverage throughout the season as well and they're always more than committed to try to give back, (to) help keep Junior B hockey on ice here in Windsor,” said Lindsay.

The cost to participate in the golf tourney is $450 per team. That includes the cart rental as well as a steak dinner and prizes that are awarded throughout the day.

Although early registration is appreciated, Lindsay said if there's space available they will accept teams right up until the day of the tournament. The team is also looking for hole sponsorship.

The third annual Valley Maple Leafs Golf Tournament will be held at the Avon Valley Golf and Country Club on June 19. Registration is at noon, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

“Any fundraising efforts that are done throughout the year certainly help offset those operating costs and provide the kids a place to play hockey and maybe a little bit of entertainment for the community.”

Registration forms can be found online at the Valley Maple Leafs' Facebook page, or interested people can contact Lindsay at 902-791-0090.
