On March 4 in Kentville, the PEB Sharks were one of the top four teams from the 13-team league vying for the championship of the Valley High School Hockey League. The Sharks won their semi-final game over the Avon View Avalanche 8-7 in overtime. Early on in the game the Sharks had taken a big lead when they scored four unanswered goals in a span of one minute and 30 seconds. The score was 5-1 in PEB's favour at the end of the first period, but Avon View had closed the gap to 6-4 at the end of the second. A 7-7 tie forced the game into OT. (See scoring results here.)

The league final saw the Sharks coast to an easier win, defeating Forest Heights 7-1.

The fourth team at the league championship had been Park View, who had lost 5-1 to Forest Heights in the other semi-final.

Now attention turns to regionals.

As the high school hockey season nears its completion, teams will compete at regionals, looking for the chance to advance to provincials.

In Yarmouth this week four schools are competing in D3 regionals: Par-en-Bas, Digby, Bridgetown and Forest Heights.

Par-en-Bas head coach Julien Boudreau says this has been an interesting hockey season for the Sharks, who joined a new league, which entailed much more travel than in past years. He says the team is hoping to add two Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation banners to its season collection: first regionals, then provincials.

“PEB has never won the provincial title,” he says. “You need to look way back to 1998 when SAR won provincials. Lets hope we can make history.”

Because Forest Heights is hosting D3 provincials in Chester, there are a number of scenarios that might be played out at regionals since Forest Heights plus the highest seed from regionals will advance to provincials.

If Forest Heights finishes regionals in sole possession of first place after the round robin, that team would be awarded the regional banner as champion and the teams in second and third place would play a game for the right to advance to provincials at the end of the month.

If Forest Heights is tied for first with another team after the round robin, then Forest Heights and the other team would play a championship game to determine the regional winner with both teams in that game advancing the provincials. This would be the same scenario if Forest Heights finishes the round robin in second place.

The schedule for D3 regionals is as follows:

FRIDAY, MARCH 6:

• 1 p.m. Par-en-Bas vs Digby

• 2:45 p.m. Bridgetown vs Forest Heights

• 6:15 p.m. Bridgetown vs Par-en-Bas

• 8 p.m. Forest Heights vs Digby

SATURDAY, MARCH 7:

• 9 a.m. Digby vs Bridgetown

• 10: 45 a.m. Forest Heights vs Par-en-Bas

• 4 p.m. Last game to determine who advances to provincials

There is free admission to all games.

Games will also be live streamed over the MC Media Mariners Centre live stream website at https://new.livestream.com/mcentremedia .

OTHER HIGH SCHOOL REGIONALS

The Yarmouth Vikings, meanwhile, will compete at Division 2 regionals. (School divisions are based on student population). D2 regionals are being hosted in Berwick by Central Kings on Sunday, March 8 and Monday, March 9.

Six teams will compete at these regionals: Yarmouth, Central Kings, North Kings (NKEC), West Kings, Horton and Barrington.

On Sunday Yarmouth plays Central Kings at 1 p.m. and West Kings at 4:20 p.m.

This year three of the six D2 schools at regionals will advance to provincials. The two teams that finish in first place in their pools after the round robin advance, as does the winner of the last scheduled game following crossovers.

Division 2 boys’ provincials are being hosted by Eastern Shore District High School at the end of the month.

Earlier this week high school girls’ regionals were held in Middleton on Monday and Tuesday.

The Yarmouth Vikings team captured the regionals banner with a 5-1 win over Middleton in the championship game. Yarmouth advances to high school hockey girls’ provincials as a result.

At the girls’ regionals, provincials host West Kings and the four highest seeds following the tournament's completion advanced to provincials.

The Par-en-Bas girls had also competed at regionals but didn’t win their games.

All high school hockey provincials are being held March 27-29.
