Kingston native, Valley Wildcat named to Nova Scotia's Canada Games hockey team

KINGSTON - A Kingston native has been named to Nova Scotia’s Canada Winter Games male hockey team.

Cole Rafuse, 15, who currently plays for the Valley midget Wildcats, has been selected for the 20-member team.

The six-foot-two forward has 21 points already this season in 18 games played with the Wildcats, including nine goals and 12 assists.

Team Nova Scotia is comprised of two goaltenders, six defencemen and 12 forwards from across the province.

 Nova Scotia will compete in Pool B at the tournament in Prince George, B.C., with Saskatchewan, Quebec and Alberta. The players will play their first game on Feb. 22 against Quebec.

The gold medal game is planned for March 1.

The players were notified that they had made the final roster Nov. 19 via a message from 2011 Team Nova Scotia member and current Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon.

Nova Scotia will be coached by head coach Jim Midgley (Dartmouth/Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL) and assistant coaches Kevin Mitchell (Halifax/Hockey Nova Scotia high performance program) and Aaron Rice (Sydney/Cape Breton Tradesmen, NSMMHL). 

Bob Mayo (Dartmouth/Hockey Nova Scotia high performance program) will serve as the team's goaltending coach. Darren Sutherland will act as the team's director of operations, while Chris Waugh will return as equipment manager.
