The King’s-Edgehill School’s senior girls hockey team ended the 2013-14 season capturing their second straight provincial win.

The girls went 5-0 in tournament play at provincials in Bedford March 21-23, ultimately beating Halifax West 3-1 in the championship game.

Head Coach Laura Shearer says the team went into provincials with three solid lines stacked with versatile players between the ages of 12 and 18.

“We have a lot of depth in our team and we have a lot of young kids and they actually contributed quite a bit,” she said, noting that many of their players practice year-round.

Tiffany Hill, 12, proved that age is but a number when she scored a hat trick in the senior high tournament, and it was three junior school players that scored for KES in the final.

Shearer says every player that took the ice contributed to the win.

“They all played their best.”

She attributes the team’s success to the fact that they don’t have to rely on a few star players.

KES will lose three graduating players this year: Erica Kelly, Beth Lawrence and Ekaterina Nikonova, of Russia. Kelly has been selected to play Division 1 NCAA hockey for Union College in Schenectady, New York, where she will be competing at the highest US college/university sport level.
