Digby Mariners get 5-4 win over Yarmouth Vikings in high school hockey

YARMOUTH – In their first matchup of the season, the Digby Mariners defeated the Yarmouth Vikings 5-4 in Valley High School Hockey League action played at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth on Sunday evening, Nov. 1.

Midway through the first period Digby jumped out to 3-0 lead, scoring three goals within a 48-second span. Goals were scored by Logan Bell, Brandon Sullivan and Ryan Doucette. In net for the Yarmouth Vikings Luke Emin came in to replace Bradley Verran. Digby maintained the 3-0 lead heading into the dressing room after the first period.

Yarmouth put its first marker on the board 11 seconds into the second period on a goal scored by Steven Moore, which cut the Mariners lead to 3-1. Two minutes and 9 seconds into the second period the Vikings scored again with Oliver Johansson’s goal bringing the Vikings to within one in a 3-2 game. Not long after Digby’s Braden Trimper scored on the power play to double the Mariners lead to 4-2. The Vikings once again came back within one with a goal by Dylan d’Entremont that made it a 4-3 game heading into the dressing room after the second period.

The Vikings spent a lot of time on the penalty kill during the game, successfully killing off seven of nine Digby power plays. The home team tied the game 4-4 in the third period on a short-handed goal scored by Brad Jones. But Digby extended its lead to 5-4 – one of its two power play goals of the game – on a goal by Riley LeBlanc.

The Vikings pulled their goalie for the last 30 seconds of the game but couldn’t reach the back of the Digby net. In net for the Digby Mariners’ win was Jesse Robicheau playing his first high school game.
