Top Nova Scotia curlers to compete in Windsor this weekend

WINDSOR — A total of $6,000 will be up for grabs this weekend at the Spitfire Arms Curling Cashspiel at the Windsor Curling Club.

Sixteen teams will be taking part, including several local Hants West curlers. Tournament chair Richard Barker will be skipping one team, while his wife Shelley Barker will curl on Jocelyn Nix's team. Courtney Smith, of Windsor, will be a member of Marg Cutcliffe's team.

Several prominent provincial curlers, including Allan O’Leary, a skip on Canada's current senior men's championship team, and Colleen Pinkney, a two-time Canadian senior champion skip and a two-time provincial senior champion, will be competing for the top prize.

“Provincial curlers enjoy coming to Windsor because of the excellent ice conditions, which would not be possible without Dave Penney and the team he has so trained so diligently,” said Barker.

Due to the popularity of the cashspiel, the event will be expanded to 20 teams next year.

There is no charge to visit the curling rink on the weekend to take in some of the action.

Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 29 and will run late into the evening. The cashspiel will continue until Sunday afternoon.
