LAKE DOUCETTE, Southwestern N.S. – Tires flying. Cars dying. Track delays. And the occasional fire – June 25 wasn’t your typical day of racing at the Lake Doucette Motor Speedway for either the racers or the spectators. Not that any race day is predictable.

But in the words of Taylor Swift there was only one thing to do – shake it off.

June 25 was Larry Gavel Memorial Race Day at the Lake Doucette Motor Speedway.

Sunday, June 25, was the second race day of the 2017 season at the Lake Doucette Motor Speedway track and was dubbed Larry Gavel Memorial Race Day. Gavel, who died in May 2014, was a mechanic for most of his life, working at Tusket Ford, which was the race day sponsor. He loved racing and was a 7X champion. He competed at Lake Doucette Motor Speedway dating back it its dirt track days, and also raced at Edson Foote, Halifax Exhibition Park, Liverpool and Clyde River raceways.

Race day drew a good number of spectators from Yarmouth and Digby counties, and even further away. As usual on Sunday, June 25, race day started off with the different heats that determine where racers will start in the featured races later in the day. But as the afternoon wore on the pit turned out to be as busy – if not busier – than the track itself.

Trevor Penny, #18, didn’t get to race at all when his car wouldn’t start after the dash out.

Ian DeViller, #24, and Tam MacPhee, #22, both found themselves in the same boat when their lost their brakes and couldn’t finish the day with their cars. MacPhee, who competes in the 4 Cyl women’s races, drove her son Shay’s 4 Cyl vehicle in the women’s feature final. She won the race but because she wasn’t driving her vehicle the finish doesn’t count in the standings.

Earlier in the day Tam MacPhee was overcome on the final lap by Rachelle Muise in the first 4 Cyl Women’s heat. In the next heat Muise would see misfortune of her own as a wheel came off her vehicle seconds before crossing the finish line for the checkered flag. The remaining two racers battled for that heat, with Alicia White, #2, winning. Muise was able to get back onto the track for the final lap, albeit well behind, but by doing so managed to avoid the ‘did not finish.’

Barb Morris’s car #73, also was not working well for her on race day but she managed to finish all races, which will help with her points for the year.

Muise’s car wasn’t the only one to lose a wheel. In an earlier 4 Cyl Men’s heat Dominique Hanna’s wheel, #84, could be seen by spectators wobbling on a turn before flying off, narrowly missing other racers as it bounced across the track on one of the corners.

There was a rare lengthy delay in the early part of the afternoon during a Sportsmen heat when Justin Goodwin’s car, #10, lost a large pipe off his car and Paul Morris, #56, picked it up under his car, tearing a hole in his oil pan and leaving oil on much of the track that had to be cleaned up.

And it didn’t end there.

Steve MacPhee, #53, and Wheels, #9, both saw their throttles stick on, causing some tense moments. Shay MacPhee, #17, needed a new fan switch because his car was heating up. On the bright side for Shawn Burke, #37, the lengthy delay caused by the oil on the track gave him the time needed to change his radiator during a caution as his fan wasn’t working and his car had overheated.

Overheating turned out to be a theme during part of the day when Kyle Hines vehicle, #47, had a small fire that was put out with a fire extinguisher and Shaun Burke, #8, quickly exited his vehicle when it experienced a fire, giving new meaning to heats at race day.

Phew, that’s a lot of stuff.

So how did the standings turn out when all was said and done?
