The Yarmouth Mariners had a 2-1 overtime win over the division-leading Truro Bearcats in Yarmouth on Friday night and while a big win for the team, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to gain ground on the Amherst Ramblers who also had a Feb. 28 win.

While Yarmouth and Amherst are tied with 63 points, the Ramblers still sit ahead of the Mariners in third place in the Eastlink Division. The Mariners’ Friday night win still keeps them in the running to overtake the third place position.

There was no scoring by either team in the first period. The Mariners opened their scoring at 6:16 in the second period on a goal by Braden Mercier (Shawn Boudreau, Billy Hartley). Truro answered back at 17:13 with a goal by Daniel Poliziani (Denver Lynds).

The third period saw no scoring.

The winning goal was a one-timer by Morgan Messenger at 4:18 in overtime on a pass by Colin Campbell.

In net for Truro Chris Festarini stopped 40 of 42 shots in the loss. For the Mariners, Chase Gaudet stopped 30 of 31 shots for the win.

Colin Campbell, incidentally, has two more games in which to break a team record for the most goals by a Mariner in regulation play. He’s tied a record of 98 goals set by former Mariner Justin d’Entremont.

The Mariners last two games of the regular season are a home and away with the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. Bridgewater travels to Yarmouth on Saturday evening. The Mariners head up that way on Sunday.
