CFOA offers experience to ferry committee

Vanguard news

The CEO of the Canadian Ferry Operators Association is suggesting those preparing the next Request for Proposals (RFP) process for a proposed ferry service between Yarmouth and Maine, may want go back to the drawing board and re-write how the RFP is structured.

Serge Buy emerged from meetings with Transport Canada last Tuesday, March 5, to speak with the Vanguard about the province’s announcement earlier that day that neither of the ferry two bids met the RFP’s minimum criteria and that the province was preparing to re-issue a RFP for establishment of a 2014 service.

Buy said the association is committed to supporting the province in its efforts to see a service return between Nova Scotia and Maine and hopes issues surrounding the structure of the original RFP are addressed.

“Why did no Canadian operators express an interest?”  he asked.

He said that is the question that those preparing to re-issue the RFP may want to consider.  He is inviting those developing the new RFP to communicate with the Canadian marine transportation sector. He’d welcome the opportunity for the association to be at the table.

“We would be able to respond to some of their questions around what are the issues. Our association, which represents the ferry operators, would be able to provide them with some good ideas in terms of how to go ahead,” he said.

As for the Canadian Ferry Operators Association, Buy says they were not requested to provide input prior to the release of the first RFP, but would welcome the opportunity to provide assistance in advance of the next round.

“We are ready, willing and able to support and provide assistance to this proposal, Buy said. “There is a huge amount of experience and expertise from our Canadian operators.”

The Canadian Ferry Operators Association is the national voice of ferries in Canada. The board of directors includes a mix of representatives from the private and public sector.
