The unemployment rate reported for the month of December was the highest rate for the month since 1993.
At the same time, the participation rate - the percentage of people working or looking for work compared to the population aged 15 and over - decreased by 0.9 percentage point to 58.9 percent.
By comparison, the unemployment rate in Nova Scotia for December 2012 was 9.3 per cent and for Canada was 7.1 per cent, the lowest rate in four years.
