The challenge is on to fill three Volkswagen Beetles with donations for the Wolfville and Area Food Bank.
The food drive takes place at Save Easy in Wolfville Dec. 1 from 9:30 a.m. until the three red Beetles are filled. Organizer Robert Porter of the Mud Creek Rotary Club said the club is partnering with the IT company Nerds on Site for the unique “Fill the Beetle” challenge.
“The need is significant in Wolfville,” Porter said. “Mud Creek volunteers every other week at the Wolfville and Area Food Bank to unload the Feed Nova Scotia truck bringing food to Wolfville.”
In addition to the challenge, the Mud Creek club collects cash donations for the food bank each Wednesday through November, ending Dec. 5. Porter said Feed Nova Scotia supplies dry goods and “real food” when it’s available in the fall. The money raised is used to supplement the dry good offerings.
The recent Trick or Eat Halloween food drive for the Wolfville and Area Food Bank put on by Acadia University students was a success, despite the arrival of the remnants of hurricane Sandy. Volunteer Will Roberts said the wind and rain subsided over the supper hour, just long enough for most of their volunteers to hit the streets.
“Over 100 students participated door-to-door and about two dozen helped throughout the night to sort and pack everything up,” Roberts said.
In addition to the 2,600 items collected Halloween, hundreds more were collected from Superstore; Happy Day Spa in Wolfville collected money and almost 100 items from clients; and General Mills directly donated 1,100 Cheerios breakfast snack packs to Acadia University Residence Life
