CAPE BRETON POST - Two people are in hospital following a motorcycle crash on the Cabot Trail near Belle Cote early Saturday evening.

RCMP Sgt. Alain LeBlanc said the 46-year-old male driver of the motorcycle lost control of the vehicle around 6:30 p.m. and a 46-year-old female passenger was also onboard the bike.

"Both were initially transported to Inverness hospital with unknown injuries, and the female passenger was airlifted to Halifax with serious injuries. LifeFlight was activated," he said.

The two injured are from Grand Falls, Newfoundland and they were traveling in a group of several bikes. At the time of the accident they were the last bike in the group, and no other motorcycles or vehicles were involved in the crash.

"Speed does not appear to be a factor," noted LeBlanc.

The police investigation into the crash is continuing.

A section of the Cabot Trail was closed for a short time as emergency responders assisted the injured and cleared the scene.
