Kings County, N.S. - Kings District RCMP is reminding citizens to be wary of any telephone calls or e-mails they receive from individuals claiming to be representatives from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Over the last few days, Kings District RCMP have been receiving an increased number of complaints of fraudsters attempting to scam people out of their money by claiming to be a representative of the CRA.
Recent scams involve telephone calls using threatening or coercive language to scare individuals, then victims are directed to buy large quantities of iTunes cards and give the caller the activation codes.
The CRA would never ask for payment by iTunes cards. When the actual CRA calls you, it has established procedures in place to make sure your personal information is protected. If you want to confirm the authenticity of a CRA telephone number, call the CRA by using the numbers listed on their website at www.cra.gc.ca.
If you are receiving suspicious e-mails or telephone calls, hang up and report it immediately to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or online at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/reportincident-signalerincident/index-eng.htm.
