Mike Turner of Valley Credit Union, trustee of the Louis Millett Trust, said he isn’t surprised the New Minas Village Commission has unanimously decided to name their new recreation and administrative office complex in Millett’s honour.

VON has been awarded $250,000 over five years from the Millett New Minas Recreational Trust to support their companionship transportation program in Kings County.

The program was started as a pilot project in the fall of 2013 to address the growing need for transportation plus activity and social support for errands and outings.

“We have a demand from isolated seniors who are unable to access transportation in to town centres for groceries or other errands. There are other transportation options available for medical appointments, but what makes our service different is that clients have a companion who can assist them with their errands while maintaining their independence,” Jillian MacDonald, program co-ordinator, says.

“This service also gives them an opportunity to have personal interaction with a companion.”

The money provided by the trust will be used for purchase and maintenance of a vehicle and to employ qualified staff who will be dedicated to the program.

The feedback from clients has been very positive and VON would like to grow the number of clients who are currently able to access the service in Kings County.

“Louis Millett and his mother both benefited from the services of VON and had a great deal of respect for VON's work in King's County," said Mike Turner, trustee of the Millett New Minas Recreation Fund. "I know he would have been happy to help extend VON services to other people in the region."

Louis Millett was a farmer in New Minas and, prior to his death in 2005, he established the trust. The trust has helped to fund the new recreation and administrative offices in New Minas and continues to provide support to local registered charitable organizations in the New Minas area.
