2014 marks the 55th anniversary of the family-friendly Kingston Steer Barbecue and Village Fair.

A partnership of the village of Kingston, the Kingston Lions Club and Branch #98 Kingston Legion, the event, which returns July 11 and 12, is the oldest continuous running steer barbecue in the North America. Fireworks, entertainment, a community breakfast, grand street parade, great food and family-friendly fun are the hallmarks of this village fair.

While the barbecue has evolved with the changing times, the essence of the event, the practice of barbecuing a whole steer, has remained the same, with additional beef roasts being cooked to meet the demand for beef dinners and the event’s signature burger bits platter.

Along with returning favourites, this year, organizers have added Canada’s Strongest Man competition, with 90 kg and 105 kg weight classes, at the Credit Union Centre grounds. Close to 30 contestants from across Canada have signed up to compete. The competition’s preliminary rounds will be held on Friday evening from 5-8 p.m., with the final rounds taking place Saturday after the grand street parade from 2-5 p.m. Event winners will earn a berth in the World Strongman Competition being held in China and in Latvia, Russia later this year.

Also new to this year’s event line up is the inaugural motorcycle photo hunt hosted by the Millville community hall. It will be held on July 12  from 1–4 p.m. with registration beginning at noon. Registration and the starting point will be at the gazebo on Westwood Street, across from the Credit Union Centre. Registration is $15 per bike and a digital photo device is required. Prizes are available to be won.

During this opening ceremonies, which take place after the parade, the Credit Union Centre will be officially be presented with its $100,000 winnings from the 2014 Kraft Hockeyville contest.
