Kayak training is returning to Raven Haven this summer, and canoe clinics are also planned.

The County of Annapolis and Atlantic Division of CanoeKayak Canada announced the return of “The Lightning Strike – A Mobile Kayak 3-Day Children’s Program” to Raven Haven Beachside Family Park. This year’s program will take place August 26 to 28.

Also new this year, Raven Haven will be holding a three-day children’s canoe program from August 20 to 22.

Two qualified program coordinators (coaches/instructors) will teach youth fundamental skills in kayak and/or canoe, promote and educate participants in water and small craft safety, PFD use, canoeing and/or kayaking basics and give all participants the opportunity to have a fun race, and receive a certificate of camp completion. The canoes, kayaks, and other equipment are provided.

“We look forward to bringing programs like these back to Raven Haven,” said Brian Orde, recreation coordinator for the County of Annapolis. “We want people/kids to be active by canoeing/kayaking on our waterways in Annapolis County. One way to help achieve this is to make them feel safe by learning the safety aspects of the activity. I don’t think we will have a problem filling the 24 spots.”

Up to 24 kids can participate in the programs that will run between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (12 participants on-water in the morning and 12 participants on-water in the afternoon) with alternating dry-land activities provided.

Both programs will be open to children ages 8-13. The cost for each program is $60 per participant. However, if you sign up for both programs the rate will be $100 total for the two programs. Funding assistance may be available for those who qualify.
