Owner Michelle Fahie-Davidson originally opened her nautically-themed gift shop in Kentville in 2011. From there, the store moved to the old general store in Centreville in hopes of capturing the attention of tourists heading to Hall’s Harbour.
After finding it impossible to heat the old building in the winter, Fahie-Davidson is on the move again. This time, she is opening her business at 145 Commercial St. in Berwick so she can be open year-round.
The grand re-opening of the store will be on Oct. 3, and celebrations will last the week with free apple cider, sweets, draws and door prizes.
“What excites me,” says Fahie-Davidson, “is the sense of community in Berwick and that there is always new growth in town.”
The Town of Berwick is also pleased to welcome the new business.
Coun. Ty Walsh says that Berwick has become a welcoming atmosphere for those shopping for unique giftware.
At the town community development meetings, Walsh says, it’s often discussed how fortunate Berwick is to have so few empty commercial spaces left for rent due to the high interest for businesses to set up shop in town.
“It’s always very exciting to welcome new entrepreneurs and see how they help evolve the growing economic landscape of our town,” says Walsh.
Walsh has a particular affinity towards Ocean Zn - for his wedding four years ago, he and his wife purchased bridal party jewelry from Fahie-Davidson, saying it looked “exquisite.”
Ocean Zn carries products mostly related to nautical décor, including sea glass jewelry and sea glass art, body products and home décor. Over 30 local vendors are featured so there is a wide variety of gifts.
As before, Fahie-Davidson says she will continue to offer parties and workshops in a customer’s home, or events for large groups. Participants, either adults or children, can make their own sea glass pendant with an anchor charm.
Ocean Zn is open from 12 to 4 p.m. seven days a week until November, when hours will change from Thursday to Sunday from November to May.
