BEAR RIVER, N.S. - About 80 ladies enjoyed a night out in Annapolis County recently to help raise funds for the Bear River Fire Hall.
The Ladies Night event was held Nov. 17 to raise funds for the local volunteer fire department and hall. Kristen Gunn, an associate member and member of the Bear River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, said a little more than $2,000 was raised and participants enjoyed a range of activities from a fashion show, to dancing, to a purse auction.
“We had different vendors showcasing their businesses, we had appetizers, there was wine tasting and there was a candy bar,” said Gunn. “And of course, there was music.”
The event also featured 12 door prizes, desserts and non-alcoholic beverages.
Gunn said the Ladies Auxiliary does several fundraisers during the year. She said funding is used to help train firefighters and to replace and maintain equipment as well.
“They were doing some repairs on the roof, for example,” she said. “There’s another repair they need to do to one of the fire trucks and other stuff they needed to get done. So, we decided as a Ladies Auxiliary to put this fundraiser together to help them out.”
The Bear River Volunteer Fire Department serves the community of Bear River, which is located about ten minutes from Highway 101. With 31 members, the Bear River Fire Department has one of the biggest volunteer fire districts in the province.
The department responds to approximately 80 emergency calls per year.
