What was life like in 1759 when Liverpool became established as a township? A simpler time? Were values different? Were life’s struggles any different?

These are some of the questions and reflections that became part of the plans of the Liverpool Baptist Church for a celebration service. On Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. they will be holding an Ecumenical Service commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Town of Liverpool followed by time of refreshments.

Ecumenical means persons from all faiths are welcome to participate

“We want to focus on how it was then, and how the church affected people’s lives,” says Susan Pyke Whynot, an organizer with the committee putting the service together

She says the church was the newspaper of its time, where people heard births, deaths, marriages, and the goings on in the community.

History, or things past, has shaped not only the landscape, but the personalities, culture and rituals of the present. Historians have come to realize that by knowing where we came from, in a very real way, has shaped who we are and how we live today.

On the larger scale, there was still the struggle of business and successes. Closer to home, the family progressed with children growing to face what the future held. Getting up each day to live life to its fullest.

There will be time travelers who are amused by the changes, hymns from then and now, and a peek at how life might have been. The special speaker will be Dr. Bob Wilson, who is Professor of Church History from Acadia Divinity College who will enlighten people on how the Church fit in to the early settlers lives and how this, in turn, shapes lives today.
