Sport fishing has been added to the itinerary of the annual Clyde River canoe rally, being hosted this Sunday (May 3) by the Shelburne County Fish & Game Association (SCFGA).

“We changed things a little bit in hopes we can attract a few more people this year,” said SCFGA president Richard Swain. “Hopefully give some kids the chance to get out and do some fishing.”

Now dubbed the Clyde River Canoe and Fishing Day, registration opens at 9 a.m. at the historic Scott Farm in Upper Clyde.

For canoeing enthusiasts, the 10k canoe run from the farm to Bloody Creek is still on, but the option is there for those who simply wish to lazily paddle up or down the river, trailing a fishing line, or who may want to paddle to one of the nearby still waters to cast for a nibble.

Others still may want to spend the day fishing from the river shores that border the Scott Farm.

While the paddling and fishing is going on, volunteers will be back at the farmhouse getting lunch ready, which includes seafood chowder and a barbecue.

Swain said the day isn’t restricted to just canoes. “Any boat is welcome,” he said, noting that all boating and fishing regulation apply.

Swain also noted that rally participants would be responsible for their own transportation back to their vehicles after completing the run.

Registration fees, which are set at $10 for people 12 years of age and over, and $5 for children between six and 12 includes lunch and the chance of winning one of the prizes generously donated by the community.
