December 14 to December 20, 2008 Robert Harry Flieger – 60, of Harbourville, Kings County, Nova Scotia. With great sadness, we announce the passing of Bob Flieger, December 14, 2008. Bob recently retired as captain with Air Canada, after 34 years in the airline industry. Along with flying, travel and model railroading, his great passion was his life on the shore with his beloved wife, B.J. Bob was a brother of Gary (Kelly), Fredericton, New Brunswick; Byron (Sandy), Windsor, Ontario; Cheryl and Heather (Ken), Calgary, Alberta. He was a nephew of Gladys Watters, Wolfville and Jean (Bill) Smith, Hantsport. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Marie “Babe” Flieger, Sussex, New Brunswick. Bob’s tremendous gift of warmth, compassion, generosity and humor will be greatly missed by all his nieces and nephews and a tremendous number of friends around the world. December 14 to December 20, 2008 Vickery, Maynard David – 78. It is with great sadness the family announces his passing on April 17, 2008 in Lindsay, Ontario. He was the son of the late Oliver and Hazel (Gallagher) Vickery of Rockville, Yarmouth County. He was predeceased by brothers George, Leslie and Roy; sisters Beatrice Porter and Margie Purdy, as well as son, Richard. Maynard is survived by sister Avis Smith and brother Ray of Yarmouth; his former wife Lorna Nickerson; son David (Terry); daughters Marilyn Quenneville-Gadbois (Kevin), Georgina Webb (Merv), Judith and Laura Lee Vickery, all of Ontario. Maynard will also be greatly missed by his 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance and cremation took place in Ontario with interment to be held at a later date.
December 14 to December 20, 2008 Edith Cavell (Coldwell) Scott – 89, of Dartmouth, formerly of Kentville, passed away Monday, December 15, 2008 in the Dartmouth General Hospital, following a short illness. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Estella (Regan) Coldwell. She was a graduate of the Wolfville High School and also completed a commercial course in stenography. She was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church and had been active with many church activities during her lifetime. For many years, she enjoyed frequent trips to the United States and spending summers in Ontario. Weekly bowling with her neighbours was among her happiest outings in recent years. Her family, friends and neighbours were a deep source of encouragement and joy. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Scott, Belleville, Ontario; a son, Richard (Alice), Dartmouth; a sister, Daisy Kempton, Connecticut; four grandchildren, Amy (John), Eastern Passage; Ian (Jamie), Moncton; Mike, Ottawa; Meredith, Belleville; numerous nieces, nephews and family in Canada and the United States. She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald; ten sisters, Lillian, Evelyn, Susan, Helen, Hazel, Viola, Nellie, Ella, Georgina and Mary; four brothers, Clarence, Wylie, Richard and William. Cremation took place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville where visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Marguerite (Peach) Smith. Geraldine was a former employee with Maritime Tel and Tel and a hostess for Wong’s Restaurant in Liverpool. She was a charter member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary; Liverpool Firefighters Association. She is survived by her husband Eugene; daughter Stephanie (Bernard) Amirault of Brooklyn and son Darren (Helen Baker) of Liverpool; grandchildren Nicholas Amirault and Mariah Farquhar; sister Marie (Peter) Goodfellow of Dartmouth and brother Kenneth (Judith) Smith of Dartmouth. December 14 to December 20, 2008 WHYNOT, Anna E. - 74, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Monday, December 15, 2008. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late William and Meadie (Shubley) Roy. Anna worked in the housekeeping department of Queens General Hospital for over twenty years until her retirement. She was also an honourary member of the Ladies Auxiliary; Liverpool Firefighters Association. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Wolfe (Dwight Stafford), of Milton; son James (Debbie) of Milton; step-daughters: Beverley (Thomas) Whynot of Liverpool and Joanne (John) Wolfe of Milton; step-sons: Stephen of BC, Tim (Brenda), Richard, Kevin (June), Gary (Paula) and Byron (Julie) all of Liverpool; six grandchildren; 16 step grandchild; six great grandchildren and one step great grandchild; step-sister Shirley (Al) Thornborrow of Toronto. December 14 to December 20, 2008 PEARLE, Elaine Blanche - age 89, Wilmot, NS passed away Monday, December 15, 2008 in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Baxter’s Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Stanley W. and Ella Mae (Porter) Brewster. Our mother was a hard working, feisty woman who could do anything she determined to do. Her passion was outside in her garden but she loved a good game of 45s, tended a variety of African Violets and a wide assortment of hand crafts including quilting, sewing, crocheting, macramé, knitting and bowling. Her hands were never idle. She was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Blue Jays. Elaine is survived by daughter, Heather Gillis (Bob Benjamin), South Farmington; sons, Ivan (Linda), Cornwallis; James (Sandy), Trout Lake; Keith (Bonnie), Mosher’s Corner; Ross (Ellen), Mount Uniacke; Delbert (Karen), Halifax; sister, Lois Daniel, Berwick; grandchildren, Darren, Craig and Evan Gillis; Stephen, Adam, Darryl, Dean, Kevin, Nancy, Kelly and Kimberly Pearle; Elisa Brown; Bud Sabean and 10 great grandchildren. December 14 to December 20, 2008 SILCOX, Luana Alvaretta - 88, of Kingston, NS, passed away peacefully Monday, December 15, 2008 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton with her family by her side. Born in Centerville, Digby Co., on February 16, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Winnifred (McNeill) Haight. Our mother was a very independent woman and worked hard all her life. She worked at the Base Exchange at CFB Cornwallis from January 1967 to August 1973. She loved crocheting, knitting, making quilts and all kinds of crafts. She also loved growing plants, making her gardens grow and was often seen by everyone raking leaves and keeping her property neat and tidy. Luana is survived by her daughter, Judith (Dwight) Marshall, Bridgetown; sons, Richard (Yvonne) Lewis, Burlington, ON; Lealand (Karen) Lewis, Deep Brook; sisters, Lorna Lewis, Paradise; Frances (Ronald) Dukeshire, Cobble Hill, BC; daughter-in-law, Josephine Lewis, Greenwood; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Silcox; son, Charles Lewis; grandson, Christopher Lewis and a brother. December 14 to December 20, 2008 Earl Basil Beach – 77, of South Alton, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in South Alton, he was a son of the late Maurice and Lotta (Ells) Beach. He had been employed with E. J. Twohig for many years and was later self-employed for 25 years in the backhoe business, from where he retired. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially enjoyed music. He was proud to have sung at over 50 different establishments, including churches, fire halls, legions, fundraisers and benefit concerts. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Grace Medicraft; a daughter, Gail, and husband, Bruce Veinot, North Alton; two grandchildren, Scott and wife, Cathy, Halifax and Laura and husband, Brian Leahy, North Alton; three sisters, Vera (Frank) Burns and Janie (Henry) White, Upper Kennetcook; Mabel (Raymond) Singer, Kennetcook; two sisters-in-law, Estelle, South Alton and Roberta, New Minas; four brothers, Charles, New Minas; Walter, Odessa, Ontario; Henry (Millie), Upper Kennetcook; Clyde (Frances), Kennetcook; several nieces and nephews. December 14 to December 20, 2008 SURETTE, Harold Joseph - 95, of Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau, Yarmouth County, passed away peacefully at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 18, 2008. Born in Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau, he was the son of the late Existe and Rosalie (Pothier) Surette. He was a mink rancher and carpenter. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was an active member of his community, having been, after retirement, president of the parish council of Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 8988. During his working life he was a school trustee and local president of the Progressive Conservative Party. He was a founding member of the West Pubnico Golf and Country Club, and was noted locally for having golfed into his 93rd year. He is survived by daughter Eloise, Halifax; sons Benoit, Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau, and Ralph (Lynn), Belleville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He also survived by sisters Clemente (Doug) Leverman, Halifax; Agnes Doucette, Villa-St-Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton; Isabelle Quirion, Toronto, and brothers Alfred, West Pubnico and Augustin (Gus), Nakile Home for Special Care, Argyle. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marie (d’Entremont), who died in 2005, sisters Eva (Bernard) Surette, Mabel (Leonard) Surette and Irène, brother Rémi and a brother, Sylvestre, in infancy. Born in Standpretty, Scotland, he was a son of the late Andrew Marshall and Agnes (Cunningham) Preston (Arnison, Scotland). Jim was a member and Past Master of Poyntz Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M., Hantsport. He was a coal miner in Scotland for many years until moving to Nova Scotia in 1948 with his wife and family, where he was employed with Minas Basin Pulp & Power until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by sons, Andrew “Drew” and family, Dartmouth; William “Bill” and family, Dartmouth, and Thomas “Tom” and family, West Brooklyn Mountain, Kings Co.; daughter, Fiona MacInnis and family, Hantsport; brother, William Preston, England; grandchildren, Brandon and Rieleigh MacInnis, Mark, Terese, Shawn, Lindsay, Jamie and Angela Preston and great-grandchildren, Connor, Benjamin, and Neave Preston, Drew and Brooke Preston and Kyla Jackson. Born in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Viola (Grant) Bonang. Mary was a very active member of the community. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, Middleton Choral Society, where she was part of the cast in four musical productions and the Nictaux Ladies Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed camping, “The Cabin” in Phinney’s Cove and “The Cottage” at East Lake. December 14 to December 20, 2008 THERIAULT, Joseph Albert Normand “Terry” - 77, Kempt Shore, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Saturday, December 20, 2008, from congestive heart failure in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with his loving wife of 15 years, Arvilla, by his side. Joseph was born in Dartmouth, but his love of adventure took him many places in the world. He lived all over Western Canada and the Northwest Territories working as a long haul trucker, driller and retiring as a supervisor for Imperial Oil. While in Australia, Joseph lived on a sailboat and realized his dream of sailing to all the ports visited by Trekka. He finally chose to return to his roots in rural Nova Scotia. Grandpa Joe, Uncle Terry, Uncle Normand will be remembered with the phrase “That reminds me of a story ...”. Joseph is survived by daughter, Debi (Bill) and son, Rob (Kathy), Calgary, Alta. Grandpa Joe will be missed by grandchildren, Chelsea and Simone, Vancouver, B.C. and Gary and Karl, Calgary. He is survived by sister, Elmina Rose (Richard), Sackville; brother, Gerald Theriault (Sue), Kempt Shore, and stepbrother, Clinton Barkhouse (Lisette), Brantford, Ont., as well as numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Vicki; parents, Albert and Verna; stepsister, Eva Skaling, and step-brothers, George and Charles Barkhouse. The family would like to thank the nurses on Unit 200, Dr. Smith and, in particular, Beverly Amos and Jocelyn Sanford for the care they provided to Joseph. Born in Cheverie, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Hazel (Sanford) Brown. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, homemaker and friend. She enjoyed travelling and camping until experiencing ill health in recent years. She is survived by two daughters, Louise West (Carl Stevens), Dartmouth; Mary Johnson, Habitant (Lillian’s caregiver); two sons, Lawrence (Mary), Habitant; John (Janet Colpitts), Dartmouth; three sisters, Daisy O’Brien, Windsor; Dolly Stillman, Kentville; Velva (Malcolm) Neil, Ontario; a brother, Delbert (Betty), Stewiacke; special grandson, Michael; 13 additional grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. December 14 to December 20, 2008 Robert Alden “Bob” Bishop - 75, of Baxter’s Harbour, Kings County, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Highbury, Kings County, he was a son of the late James and Addie Marie (Walker) Bishop. He began his career managing his first service station at the age of 17 and he was later the first operator of the Irving station at Greenwich Corner, where he also dealt in Case Tractors. He owned and operated the Look-Off Campground from 1966 to 1977. He was well-known for his work with construction, excavation and demolition. He also had been employed driving a school bus and on the fire brigade at Camp Aldershot. He was the animal control officer for the County of Kings for 10 years, retiring due to ill health. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Margaret “Fern” Huntley; two daughters, Marilyn (Marshall) Bishop-Rand, Delhaven; Darlene (Dale) Millett, Look-Off; three sons, Brian, Alden (Sheila) and Lance (Marina), all of Baxter’s Harbour; a daughter-in-law, Eleanor Bishop, Alberta; a sister, Freda Taylor, Halifax; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Bishop, Cambridge and Doris Bishop, New Minas; ten grandchildren, Claudia, Lorrie, Melany, Aaron, Devin, Dallas, Justin, Jana, Maeve and Cohen; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Carroll and Madge (Rowter) Cunningham. She was a graduate of both Kings County Academy and Mack Business College. She had been employed with the former Evangeline Broadcasting Company, as desk clerk at the Wandlyn Inn, Coldbrook and as a secretary with Nova Welding for many years from where she retired. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Carl; a son, Mark (Doris), Kentville; four grandchildren, Curtis, Zachary, Spencer and VanMarcus; nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Carroll Jr. “Buster” and his wife, Mary. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m., Monday, December 22, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008, Father Craig Christenson officiating. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Lung Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. December 14 to December 20, 2008 RICE, Bruce Elvin - 62, of Lake LaRose, Annapolis Co. passed away December 20, 2008, in the Annapolis Community Health Center. Born in Annapolis Royal, he was a son of Lorna (Beeler) Rice and the late Walter Rice. He illustrated children’s books. Bruce was an electronics technician in CFB Cornwallis and also had his own electronics business. Besides his mother he is survived by brothers, Brian of Lake LaRose, LeRoy (Donna) of Madison Georgia and a sister Susan (Tim) Lewis of Brampton, ON. Visitation was held 2-4 pm, Friday, December 26, 2008 and funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, both from the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal with Pastor Jack Skafte officiating.
