Tragic death, rash of collisions, drunk driving cap week

RCMP responded to a total of 87 calls in the Annapolis County region during the week of November 24 to December 1. Among these were nine false alarms, 10 false 911s, 11 motor vehicle accidents, and three domestic incidents.

This week’s key event is clearly the tragic death of a 65-year-old Karsdale resident clipped by a vehicle while driving a horse-drawn buggy. A more detailed account of that story can be found on Page 5.

Otherwise, a typical mix of vehicle accidents, property complaints, and some mischief and damage related to youths and snowball play. Motor vehicle accidents remained high last week, and more disturbingly after a few weeks hiatus incidents of drinking and driving make a re-appearance on this week’s list.

The RCMP would like to remind everyone to drive in accordance with road conditions, and to take special care while shopping for Christmas: Remember to lock your doors and make an effort to hide shopping bags or wrapped presents. If you can see it, so can a thief. If a thief cannot see it, they will move on to an easier target.

Of the 87 calls, the following is a summary of those deemed fit for publication:

- Nov. 24 at 2:05 p.m. Waldeck. A resident called to report damage perpetrated on his/her vehicle.

- Nov. 24 at 4:56 p.m. Cherryfield. Patrols were called out to deal with an individual causing a disturbance.

- Nov. 24 at 6:46 p.m. Highway 101 near Middleton. A single vehicle collision involving a deer caused damage to the vehicle, but no injuries.

- Nov. 24 at 7:05 p.m. Bridgetown. Members were called in to address a disturbance caused by a group of youths.

- Nov. 24 at 9:00 a.m. Bridgetown. A two-vehicle collision caused damage to the vehicles, but no reported injuries.

- Nov. 24 at 1:00 p.m. Clementsport. A vehicle impacted a deer causing damage to the vehicle, but no injuries to occupants of the vehicle.

- Nov. 25 at 8:38 a.m. Highway 1 near Wilmot. A two-vehicle accident caused by road conditions resulted in damage to vehicles, but no injuries.

- Nov. 25 at 8:56 a.m. east Dalhousie. A single-vehicle accident caused minor injuries and damage to the vehicle.

- Nov. 25 at 1:20 p.m. Cornwallis. A deer versus SUV collision caused damage to the vehicle, but not to passengers.

- Nov. 25 at 6:52 p.m. Bridgetown. A resident called in to report a group of youths causing a disturbance, but the group cleared off before officers’ arrival on the scene.

- Nov. 26 at 11:15 a.m. Middleton. A vehicle collided with a parked vehicle, causing damage but no injuries.

- Nov. 26 at 9:36 p.m. Hillsburn. Patrols responding to a report of a suspicious person were unable to locate the individual in question.

- Nov. 27 at 3:37 a.m. Nictaux. A driver lost control on an icy patch and ended up in the ditch. Damage to vehicle, but no injuries reported.

- Nov. 27 at 7:43 a.m. Highway 10 near New Albany. Another motor vehicle accident involving a single vehicle losing control on a patch of black ice. No injuries reported, but some damage to the vehicle.

- Nov. 27 at 1:33 p.m. Granville Ferry. A driver was determined to be operating a motor vehicle contrary to a disqualification or prohibition, and served with appearance papers.

- Nov. 27 at 2:20 p.m. Bridgetown. Officers investigated a report of damage to a commercial property.

- Nov. 27 at 3:10 p.m. South Farmington. A complaint of unauthorized operation of an off-road vehicles on a private property remains under investigation.

- Nov. 27 at 4:31 p.m. Delaps Cove. Officers responded to a complaint of unauthorized entry into a bush camp.

- Nov. 27 at 4:35 p.m. Bridgetown. A resident called to report the theft of his/her wallet along with personal papers.

- Nov. 27 at 5:14 p.m. Middleton. A resident reported receiving harassing phone calls.

- Nov. 27 at 8:56 p.m. Meadowvale. Members investigated a report of damage caused by objects thrown through an open window.

- Nov. 28 at 12:14 a.m. Middleton. Patrols attempting to locate a reported suspicious person were unable to locate the individual in question.

- Nov. 28 at 2:50 a.m. Lawrencetown. A complaint of a suspicious individual was dismissed as a result of investigation.

- Nov. 28 at 7:51 a.m. Middleton. A driver operating an unregistered vehicle was charged during a traffic stop.

- Nov. 28 at 9:08 a.m. Annapolis Royal. Members investigated a report of damage caused by objects thrown through a closed window.

- Nov. 28 at 10:08 a.m. Kejimkujik. Officers investigated a complaint of stolen furnace oil.

- Nov. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Round Hall. A smashed window at a community building was reported to the RCMP.

- Nov. 28 at 4:21 p.m. Wilmot. A complaint of theft from a commercial property remains under investigation.

- Nov. 28 at 6:54 p.m. Torbrook. Officers responded to a complaint of an attempted break and enter with no reported theft.

- Nov. 28 at 8:07 p.m. Middleton. An individual reported missing from an institution was located by patrols.

- Nov. 28 at 9:46 p.m. Hillsburn. Patrols responding to a report of suspicious noises and persons ruled out any risk or violation.

- Nov. 28 at 10:00 p.m. Middleton. Individuals reported to be shooting firecrackers from the window of a moving vehicle were located by patrols.

- Nov. 29 at 12:22 a.m. Middleton. An individual in breach of probation for intoxication was arrested and remanded to custody for further court proceedings.

- Nov. 29 at 6:04 p.m. Karsdale. A motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle and a horse-drawn buggy resulted in the death of one individual. The matter remains under investigation. (See page 5 for more detail).

- Nov. 29 at 8:15 p.m. Clementsport. An impaired driver was located and charged.

- Nov. 29 at 11:47 p.m. Lawrencetown. Patrolling officers made contact with the source of a noise complaint, who promised to stop the disturbance.

- Nov. 30 at 4:30 a.m. South Farmington. A suspected theft of horses was ruled out during the course of the investigation.

- Nov. 30 at 9:21 a.m. Spa Springs. The ankle bracelet worn by an individual on probation alerted RCMP that this individual was breaching the conditions of his/her sentence, so officers locate, arrested, and remanded him/her to court custody.

- Nov. 30 at 3:50 p.m. Torbrook Mines. A pick-up broke through a guardrail and ended up in a river under a bridge. The matter remains under investigation as the vehicle is possibly stolen.

- Nov. 30 at 7:11 p.m. Lawrencetown. An impaired driver was located and charged.

- Nov. 30 at 7:40 p.m. Tupperville. A resident called to complain of suspicious activity: a vehicle flashing lights across a field. Patrols responded but the vehicle had departed before their arrival.

- Dec. 1 at 9:57 a.m. Middleton. A report of stolen property remains under investigation.

- Dec. 1 at 10:20 a.m. Middleton. A report of unauthorized entry into a vehicle, and theft of loose change remains under investigation.

- Dec. 1 at 11:00 a.m. Lawrencetown. A report of damage to property: eggs and mayonnaise smeared across a front door. The matter remains under investigation.
