Deadlocked jury ends murder trial

The first-degree murder trial of William Harold Clarke, 63, has ended in a mistrial.

The jury is deadlocked.

Clarke stands charged in the shooting death of his cousin, Paul Coleman, in a Webster Court, Kentville residence Dec. 7, 2006. Coleman died as the result of a shotgun wound to the abdomen.

The three-week Nova Scotia Supreme Court trial began Nov. 3, covering a wide range of testimony and evidence, from the accused’s and victim’s family situation to the events of the day and forensic analysis.

Justice Kevin Coady heard the evidence. Ingrid Brodie represented the Crown, while Bob Stewart conducted Clarke’s defense.

Closing arguments were heard last week before the 11-person jury began deliberations. The 12th juror was excused Nov. 4.

After seeking further clarification on definitions earlier in the day, the jury acknowledged it was deadlocked Friday, Nov. 21.

Coady declared the mistrial and adjourned the matter to Dec. 16 to decide what course the charge would take.

Clarke has been remanded since December, 2006.
