Six horses perish in Brooklyn barn blaze

Fire destroyed a barn on Highway 215 in Brooklyn Thursday evening, Nov. 13. The Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call just shortly after 8:30 p.m. Mutual aid was called in from the Mount Uniacke, Windsor, Summerville and Hantsport departments.

Brooklyn Fire Chief Mark Dearman said the bulk of the fire was located in the hayloft in the upper portion of the barn and that the structure was engulfed in smoke at the time of the firefighters’ arrival.

Members were able to remove the homeowner, Wayne Ledson from the burning barn and paramedics were called to the scene. Although Ledson had inhaled some smoke, Dearman said no serious injuries have been reported.

Upon entry, members discovered two horses already expired.

At that time, Dearman noted, flames were rolling across the ceiling. Further rescue attempts were quashed and members were called out.

Dearman reported the source of the fire was likely electrical and no formal investigation is warranted. Excavators were brought in and the remainder of the barn has been pulled down.

Six horses in total perished in the blaze.
