Telephone fraud alert issued for Queens
Queens RCMP have received reports of phone calls received from unfamiliar phone numbers.
Upon accepting the call, the caller is advising the recipient that their loved one was involved in an accident. The voice directs the recipient of the call to dial another number or press digits on their touch tone phone.
By doing as directed, these and similar telephone calls open up the recipient’s phone line so the caller can make long distance phone calls, which will be charged to the recipient’s phone bill.
Queens RCMP would like to advise community members that information of this nature, such as next of kin notifications are conveyed in person.
If you receive telephone calls similar to those described, Queens RCMP is advising recipients to hang up immediately and do not press any digits on your phone as directed by the caller.
Earlier this week, Kings RMCP reported similar telephone calls from someone impersonating a police officer.
If you have been a victim of a similar occurrence and believe you are at risk of having additional charges to your phone bill, please contact PHONEBUSTERS to request additional information at 1-888-495-8501.
