Three gold, one silver for CK in soccer

“It was a really huge week.”

That was the reaction of Central Kings athletic director Leta Totten about arguably the most successful weekend in the long history of athletics at the Cambridge school.

In the space of less than 48 hours, Central Kings teams won provincial gold in boys’ and girls’ Division 2 soccer, gold in junior girls’ soccer and silver in junior boys’ soccer.

“I’ve been here 24 years and I don’t remember another weekend like this one during that time,” Totten said.

Both the CK senior boys’ and girls’ teams capped undefeated seasons with their provincial banners. The girls scored 52 goals during the season and allowed just four, while the boys scored 42 and allowed seven.

Ironically, all four games played by CK teams at the D-2 boys’ and girls’ provincials ended up as victories for the Gators by the same 3-0 score, meaning CK went through both tournaments not only undefeated, but without surrendering a goal.

The senior girls won their provincial title by blanking host Breton Education Centre in the final of the D-2 girls’ provincials in New Waterford.

Alana Fairfax, Chantal Landry and Katelyn McCluskey had the CK goals while Carrie Wood earned her second shutout in as many days.

In their opening game, the Gators blanked Amherst with Fairfax, Chantal Landry and Lauren Landry scoring the goals and Wood perfect once again in goal.

Little history of their own

Meanwhile, at South Colchester Academy in Brookfield, the Central Kings boys were making a little history of their own. In search of their own undefeated season, the CK boys opened with a shutout of host South Colchester. Exchange student Thalis Ursi had two goals and James Nunn one. Dustin Poirier recorded the shutout.

Advancing to the final against Breton (at the same time as the same two schools were meeting in the girls’ final in Cape Breton), Ursi potted two goals and Austin Clem one. Poirier earned the shutout again.

At the junior level, there are no provincials and a regional title is the most a school can expect to attain. The Central Kings junior girls and boys both won districts and advanced to their respective regional tournaments.

Both teams made it to the final, with the CK girls winning their regional banner with a 1-0 win over Centre Consolidated. Haleigh Fletcher scored the game’s only goal on a header off a corner kick and Vanessa Robertson earned the shutout in goal.

The CK junior boys weren’t as fortunate, dropping a 5-1 decision to Centre in their final and settling for silver medals. Luke Doucet scored his team’s only goal.
