Concerns about cut backs in operating hours at the Roseway Hospital emergency room were addressed at the Sept. 15 meeting of the Municipality of Barrington.
September and October so far have been much better than July and August with regard to scheduling says administrator Jodi Ybarra.

“But there are still consistent, regular closures,” she said.

“Right now we are in better shape than we are normally because we still have a locum that’s extended her time with us. She was going to be gone the end of August but she’s extended her time to the end of October.”

Ideally, three or four more doctors are required to ease the stress on the ER.

Dr. John Keeler, chief of staff at Roseway Hospital, says a recently formed doctor recruitment committee has not had great success to date.

“We’re beating the bushes,” he said.

“In all fairness, it’s still early. You have to be in it for the long haul.

“Ideally you want younger physicians. You don’t want someone who’s going to retire in a few years.”

The discussion also touched on the use of the ER when it is closed to the public. Members were informed that the ER is sometimes used for ambulatory care when there is no other space available for that purpose. It’s also used for other procedures when required. It was suggested that use of nurse practitioners trained to work in the ER might be an alternative.

There are a lot of Philippine Doctors willing to immigrate and work for the Canadian people. We hope the government can facilitate this.
