There were a few surprises as the County of Kings confirmed the list of candidates for the upcoming municipal election. The deadline for nominations was Tuesday, Sept. 9. Election day is Saturday, Oct. 18.

The only electoral district with more than two candidates running is District 4, where incumbent Fred Whalen, current Warden of the County of Kings, will be challenged by Jason Langille, Bil Scott and Adrian Doherty.

Two current councillors will be returned by acclamation. No one will contest the current Deputy Warden, Diana Brothers, in District 6 and councillor Wayne Atwater will be returned by acclamation in District 5.

All other electoral districts will feature two candidates: the incumbent councillor and an opponent, with the exception of District 9. Current councillor Barry Peterson has chosen not to re-offer. Bob Best and Basil Hall will be the candidates in District 9.

County of Kings Returning Officer Ann Longley has released the names of Annapolis Valley Regional School Board candidates for school districts within the County of Kings as well.

The only school district with more than two candidates is District 8 (encompassing the Town of Berwick and Kings County electoral districts 4 and 9). Barry Corbin and Mike Mason will challenge incumbent Dwight Johnson.

Jenny White will be returned by acclamation in School District 5 (the Town of Kentville and Kings County electoral District 3); Charlene Davies will be returned by acclamation in School District 6 (Kings County electoral districts 10 and 11); and Lavinia Parrish-Zwicker will be returned by acclamation in School District 10 (the Town of Wolfville and Kings County electoral District 12).
