Yarmouth Garden Club holds first autumn meeting

There is still lots of work to be done in the garden, says president Charlotte Throp.

“People are getting patio planters ready with fall mums, weeding, and taking advantage of the plant sales at the garden centres and planting shrubs. You can get some at half price this time of year,” she said.

Throp advises soaking the roots of sale shrubs for half an hour in water to help them recuperate from a summer in containers.

At the Sept. 9 meeting a plant swap will be held. People are encouraged to bring all types of plants to swap.

For the October meeting, David Latter from Halifax will talk on orchids. In November, the subject is Gardening Photography Composition, with Sue Hutchins and Sandra Phinney.

2009 memberships (applicable now) are available with the Yarmouth Garden Club for $10. All members receive 10 per cent off their plant purchases at participating garden centres and nurseries.

“This is the time of year to start cleaning up,” said Throp.

“And if you start cleaning up now, you’ll have less to do in the spring.”
