“Living on Earth as if we want to stay” discussion Sept. 15
Author Mike Nickerson and activist Donna Dillman will be facilitating a discussion on sustainability at the Yarmouth library on Monday, Sept. 15 from noon to 2 p.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Tusket River Environmental Protection Association is organizing the visit.
Nickerson and Dillman are in the area as part of their international book tour for Life, Money & Illusion.
Nickerson has spent 35 years studying cultural evolution and communicating the sustainability message. His writings include: "Bakavi; Change the World I Want to Stay On" (1977), "Let's Talk About Sustainability" (1987), "Planning for Seven Generations" (1993) and the newly released "Life, Money & Illusion; Living on Earth as if we want to Stay."
Dillman has long been involved in promoting community sustainability, with the focus on relationships within communities and with the environment. She recently gained fame as the uranium activist who went 68 days without food last fall to protest exploration near their home in eastern Ontario.
Together, they administer the sustainability project - an educational, non-profit organization that promotes green values.
With "Life, Money & Illusion" in hand to provide details, they encourage people to think and talk about changing customs and institutions, with the emphasis on sustainable thinking and behaviour.
“One by one, people are realizing that human activity cannot grow forever on a finite planet. When enough people understand this, the conventional wisdom will shift. It will move from:” Our purpose is to expand production and consumption." to,” Our purpose is to enjoy living while managing the planet for generations to come," says Nickerson.
