Basin reopens for shellfish harvesting
Two and a half months after a sewage spill closed the Annapolis Basin to shellfish harvesting, the clam flats are open again.
Parts of the Basin have been opened since the May 17 closure—excepting Zone 1, the area nearest Digby and Smith’s Cove—but the Department of Fisheries and Oceans opened that zone as well today.
The problem wasn’t simply sewage. During recent months, there was also a closure due to concerns about paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP).
A spill from the town of Digby’s sewage was blamed for the initial closure May 17, when heavy rains overwhelmed the facility.
