Police work continues, says detachment commander
Digby’s RCMP detachment is still doing business as usual, despite being mired in controversy over a June 22 Tasering incident, says Staff-Sgt. Phil Barrett.
In a brief interview today, the detachment commander said it is important that area residents, especially in the town, are reassured that policing is continuing while an investigation is carried out into the incident that saw a young black man shot with a Taser by an RCMP officer.
Members of the black community have protested that racial slurs by an off-duty police officer triggered a fight, and that the white officer was left alone by RCMP, while William Drummond was singled out.
Barrett said an investigation began immediately after the incident, but added he has complete confidence in his officers.
A video of the incident was captured by town cameras, but unfortunately lacks audio, said Barrett. He hopes the RCMP major crimes division will complete its investigation soon.
The detachment commander said he has welcomed the calls of support he and his officers have been getting from the local community.
