Shellfish harvesting ban extended
Almost all of the Annapolis Basin is affected by the latest prohibition of shellfish harvesting.
A portion of Zone 3, the Karsdale and Twin Cove Road area, remains open but the remainder of the basin is closed due to an increase in levels of bacteriological contamination.
The basin has been closed in one or more of its three zones since May 17 when heavy rainfall resulted in a sewage overflow at Digby’s wastewater treatment plant.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada advises the public that the closure for harvesting of bi-valve and gastropod molluscs is for both recreational and commercial purposes.
Shellfish affected are those with two shells, and include oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, quahogs and whelks.
