Paralytic shellfish poisoning in part of Annapolis Basin
Waters in the Digby-Smith’s Cove area, which have been closed since mid-May because of sewage contamination, now have another problem—paralytic shellfish poisoning or PSP.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is planning to announce tomorrow that the section of the Annapolis Basin known as Zone 1 is now showing unacceptable levels of PSP.
A portion of Zone 2 remains closed because of contamination, but the easternmost part of Zone 2 and all of Zone 3 are not affected.
Annapolis Basin waters in the Digby area have been undergoing regular testing since the sewage spill May 17 closed down shellfish harvesting, says Richard Young, the DFO’s Maritimes chief of regulations.
Shellfish involved include clams, mussels, scallops, quahogs, whelks and oysters. Periwinkles are not affected.
