Yarmouth Hydrants Color Coded

Very shortly all Yarmouth hydrants will be showing a bit of color rather than the all yellow we are accustomed to seeing. The caps at the top of the hydrant will be painted various colors to designate the gallons per minute of flow, which will assist firefighters as they approach a fire needing water. A light blue top has a capacity of 1500 GPM or greater which is indicates a large water line. Green would provide 1000 GPM up to 1499. Orange has a rating of 500 to 999 GPM, red less than 500 GPM. Hydrants not connected to the Towns water system would provide their own color code.

Seven YFD firefighters along with members of most local departments were in Wolfville on June 6, 7 and 8 attending a fire department information conference. Yarmouth member included Peter Winship, Robert Muise, Jim Watkins, David Winship, Kevin D’Entremont, Mike Deveau and Pieter Nickerson. The conference included hands on training and workshops/speakers from the United States and Canada. Other training includes fire ground leadership, fire ground hose selection, and placement, changes in fire behavior and fire department tanker safety.

And The Winners Are

Another excellent buffet meal provided by the Austrian Inn brought the end to another bowling season. Trophies, jackets and shirts were presented to the members of the winning teams and individual winners. The Wedgeport and District team were the schedule winners as well as first division winners. “B” section winners were from Carleton fire department and in the “C” section the Ladies finally got the best of Salmon River. Because of the long list of individual winners we will print only the top ones in each section. “A” section High Average- Hank Nickerson- 110.86, High Triple- Gerald Thibedeau- 318, High Single- John Harris and Ed Hartley-140. “B” section- High Average- John Cunningham- 111.78, High Triple- Junior Dulong- 371, High Single- Earl D’Entremont- 145. “C” section, High Average- Carol Lowe- 95.38, High Triple- Eleanor Atkins and Stewart Deveau- 308, High Single- Jim Watkins- 120.

The Barbecue Season

For your safety everyone should follow the following safety rules.

1. If you smell gas shut off the supply.

2. Shut off burner control.

3. Extinguish and open flames.

4. Open grill lid.

5. And be sure to check the barbecue for leaks before using it.

New Members Needed

As many volunteer organizations are experiencing a drop off in their memberships the fire departments are no exception. The Yarmouth department is looking for recruits with the following qualifications. 19 years of age at the time of your application. Reside within the Yarmouth Fire Department response area. Submit and pass a criminal history back ground check. Pass a medical examination. Have completed grade 12 or equivalent. Be able to pass a provincial certification examination after training. More information and application forms may be picked up at the fire hall on Pleasant Street.
