June 8 to June 14, 2008 CARTER, William Vincent - 81, Yarmouth, passed away June 9, 2008, in Tidal View Manor. Born in Yarmouth on March 29, 1927, he was a son of the late Thomas W. and Ivy May Carter. Bill was involved in his community over the years with Red Cross loan equipment, was a Scout leader, on the Board of Directors for Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Yarmouth School Board, Yarmouth Fire Department, Kaye Nickerson Care Centre, and the SPCA. He was one of the founding members of the Yarmouth Food Bank in the mid 1980's. He was awarded the Adult Peace Medal (YMCA) in 2006 for his work with the local food bank. Surviving are wife, Mary Elaine Carter, Yarmouth; daughter, Lesa K. Cox (Bill), Yarmouth; son, Michael W. Carter (Lynn), Carlisle, Ont.; sisters, Evelyn Cunnningham, California; Genevieve Keddy (Anderson), Halifax; brother, Jack (Jackie), California. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren who were the love of his life, Jennifer, Kimberley, Alyson, Devin, Megan, Erin and Nathan. Bill was predeceased by sisters, Muriel and Maude; brothers, Donald, Bernard, George, Thomas, and Laurence. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There were no visiting hours at Bill's request. Memorial service was held Thursday, June 12, at 10 a.m. in St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Chebogue Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Yarmouth Food Bank or a charity of choice. June 8 to June 14, 2008 SWEENEY, Donald Clyde - 65, Gavelton, left us suddenly on Sunday, June 8, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital and is already greatly missed by family and friends, including his pride and joy, "Precious", a.k.a. "Guard Dog". Born on March 15, 1943, he was a son of the late Alfred and Leota (Allen) Sweeney. To quote Bob Frelick, while reminiscing today, "Don lived his life like a circus, just experiencing one ride after another, never stopping". Don had many experiences in life, from operating his own gravel business to later working as a marine engineer until he was injured. He had been employed with Dome Petroleum, Husky, Secunda, and even managed to put in nine years on the MV Bluenose, along with scallop fishing aboard the Lady Lisa out of Yarmouth. Don also loved the outdoors, being an avid and accurate hunter, and enjoyed four-wheeling as a member of the Southwest Nova ATV Association. Don enjoyed a few indoor activities, including his woodworking and his highly anticipated Saturday night poker at Neil Duncanson's store with the boys. Don was a member of the Merchant Marine and an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 61. Don has left an irreplaceable void in many lives, including his wife of 17 years, Lillian (Bower); sons, Paul J. (Joanne) and Donald E. (Theresa), all in Yarmouth; stepdaughter, Jody L. Nickerson (Sean), Barrington; grandchildren, Christopher, Hilliary and Trinity Lynn; stepgrandchildren, Jeremy and Brittany; brothers, Victor (Ellen), British Columbia; Malcolm "Mac" (Karen), Tusket; Jack, Yarmouth; sister, Barbara (Charlie) Brittain, Tusket. Don was predeceased by his son, Glenn W. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visitation was held Wednesday, June 11 from 7-9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service was held Thursday, June 12, at 2 p.m. in Beacon United Church, Beacon Street, Yarmouth, Pastor Don Moses officiated. Following the service, there was a reception at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Diabetes Association of Canada. June 8 to June 14, 2008 HORTON, Earl Kitchener – 90, passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2008. He was the son of the late Albert Horton and Nellie Pugh. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Donald) Ogden, Raynardton, and son Arthur Horton, Ontario; grandson, Alex Ogden, Tusket Falls; a sister, Alma Bower, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth. Predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Raynard) Horton; brothers, Lindsay, Arthur, Everette; sisters, Eva, Clara. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There will be no visitation or flowers by request. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. June 8 to June 14, 2008 Lorimer Seymour “Larry” Schnare – 86, of Coldbrook, Kings County passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Canada Creek, he was a son of the late Arthur and Nettie (Baltzer) Schnare. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. Following the war, he had been employed with the Liquor Control Board for the Province of Ontario, from where he retired. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Woodstock, Ontario and enjoyed fishing, bowling, curling, playing cards, hunting, gardening, art work and collecting coins. He was the beloved husband of Irma (McKee) Schnare and the beloved father of Barry (Janet), Wooler, Ontario; Carl (Carole), Edmonton, Alberta. He is also survived by a sister, Doris McGee, Peterborough, Ontario; a brother, Barry (Phoebe), Woodstock, Ontario; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Lori and Jamie; three great grandchildren, Jessica, Victoria and Gabriel; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick and Cecil; a half-sister, Madeline Baltzer; a half-brother, William Baltzer. Visitation was held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the Royal Canadian Legion funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial took place in the Berwick Cemetery. A reception followed in the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, River Street, Kentville. June 8 to June 14, 2008 TUCKER (Rafuse), Dorothy May - 75, of Windsor, went home in a peaceful sleep to be with our Lord June 9, 2008. Dorothy is survived by daughters, Judy Mitton (Phil), Kentville, and children Giselle Theriault and Andrew Mitton (Lisa), and great- grandson ,Ashton; Heather Dunbar (Joe), Kentville, and children Joanna, Jamie and Mitchell Foley, Annette Foley (Hank) , Windemere, and children Tiffany and Chistopher Foley; Jerry and Melissa Hengeveld, and also long-time companion, Raymond (Ben) Swinamer of Windsor. She is also survived by brother, Seymour, and sisters Margarite, Pauline, Jessie and Vivian. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Minnie (Gould) and Clyde Rafuse; daughter, Giselle Tucker; grandson, Leger Theriault; husband, Lawrence Percey Tucker, and several brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. Visitations were 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 12, and Memorial service was held 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, both in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor. Rev. June 8 to June 14, 2008 MUISE, Marie Georgine, 99, Nakile Home for Special Care and formerly of Surette’s Island. Georgine passed away very peacefully in her sleep, in the presence of her family, on Monday, June 9, 2008 at Nakile Home for Special Care. Born in Surette’s Island, Yarmouth County, NS on August 26th, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Augustin and Therèse Surette of Surette’s Island. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Leo, a son Allan and a granddaughter Ashley Campbell; brothers, Angus, Benjamin, Jerry, Melbourne, Peter (Margaret), Firmin better known as Forman (Florence). She leaves to mourn her children Rose-Marie (Leonard) Surette , Camille Muise, Claire (Charles) Campbell , Ada (Clifford) Amirault , Chester (Kay) Muise, and Earl (Simone) Muise all of Surette’s Island and Jeaninne Amirault and Arnold (Adeline) Muise of West Pubnico, a sister, Rosette Buse of Yarmouth and sister-in-law Therèse Surette of Nakile Home for Special Care. She also leaves 29 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Georgine was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a very dedicated community worker, a member of les Dames de Sainte Anne since 1965, and had been a correspondent for the Yarmouth Vanguard for four decades up until 1986. She also became very active at Nakile Home for Special Care – Residence Council. Visitation was at Huskilson’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth on Wednesday June 11th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8 pm. The funeral service was held on Thursday, June 12th at 2 p.m. at Saint Joseph Parish Church in Surette’s Island, Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Saint Joseph Church Cemetery Fund, Nakile Home for Special Care, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. June 8 to June 14, 2008 MUNDELL, Minnie Gertrude, 78, Barrington. The family of Minnie Mundell sadly announces her passing at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Monday, June 9, 2008. Born in Clark’s Harbour, Minnie was a daughter of the late Charles and Evelyn (Nickerson) Kenney. As a girl, she was raised in Clark’s Harbour and on beautiful Seal Island, in what she often called a “perfect childhood”. Minnie taught school as a young woman and throughout her married life enjoyed all life had to offer, everything from spending time at her cottage on Cape Negro Island, RV camping and bluegrass festivals, and a variety of seniors’ clubs. She even captained her bowling team, well into her mid 70s. Minnie traveled extensively, including Japan and Germany, and loved meeting new people. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Minnie is survived by children, Trudy (Fred) Scott, Barrington; Perry (Judy) Nickerson, Rocky Bay, Cape Breton; Ernie Mundell, New York City, N.Y., and Jeanne (Keith) Hodgkins, Bermuda; grandchildren, Gina (Greg) Delazzari, Burlington, Ontario; Tammy Nickerson, Barrie, Ontario; Jonathan and Jamin Hodgkins; great granddaughter, Ariella Delazzari; sisters, Annie Cornish, Ontario; Ethel Swim, North East Point; Verna (Jim) Nickerson, North East Point; Linda (Dennis) MacKenzie, North East Point; brother, Ronnie (Ruth) Kenney, Clark’s Harbour. June 8 to June 14, 2008 Florence Mildred Dauphinee – 93, formerly of Woodville, Kings County, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Marium (Zwicker) Henderson. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, homemaker and friend. She enjoyed needlework, especially knitting and crocheting. She also enjoyed art, especially painting. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Edward) Klein, Alberta; two sons, Arnold (Kathleen), Brooklyn Street and Gary (Dianne) Woodville; a foster son, Gary Sturk, Berwick; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; an infant daughter; seven sisters, Gertrude, Annie, Hilda, Frances, Mae, Dorothy and Lela; three brothers, Earl, Frank and Clifford. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008 in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County, Reverend Elizabeth Johnson officiated. Born in Canard, she was a daughter of the late Leander and Stella (Eaton) Eaton. Eleanor is survived by daughters, Emily (Tony) Foster, Baie Verte, Newfoundland; Miriam (Brady) Code, Kitchener, Ontario; son, William (Suzanne) Holt, Centreville, NS; grandchildren, Laura and Erin Holt, Peggy Foster; sister, Miriam (Graydon) Cox, Kentville, NS, and sister-in-laws, Ann Dexter, and Mildred (Harry) Clarke. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Bernard Eaton Holt, sister Olive Elaine Eaton, and brother Alfred Levy Eaton. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. The memorial service, followed by a reception, was held on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at 4:00pm from the Trinity United Church, Canning, with Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiated.
