Local business receives million-dollar boost

Nu-Air Ventilation Systems Inc. in Windsor was granted a $1.5-million investment from the Minister of Economic Development on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia Friday, June 13.

MLA Chuck Porter was onsite to present a cheque to Nu-air president Earl Caldwell, saying, “the government will continue to support innovative companies that contribute to making this province one of the cleanest and most sustainable environments in the world.”

Over the past 16 years of operation, the local company has worked with government and industry groups to develop standards and energy efficient products that combine heating, hot water and continuous ventilations. The company also participates with the Climate Change Action Fund to develop products that meet stringent design and technology requirements to reduce emissions that cause global warming.

The new influx of cash will mean the company can further green operations, increase productivity and create up to 78 new jobs locally, tripling the size of its current workforce.

“The Industrial Expansion Fund will enable us to get the people and equipment we are going to need to meet present and future demand for some really unique and outstanding products that address energy use and conservation issues,” Caldwell said. “This is an exciting day not just for Nu-air, but also for the community of West Hants.”

West Hants Municipal Warden Richard Dauphinee lauded the company’s initiative to hire and train local employees and said the increase in available jobs at Nu-Air is a big boost for the area. “I've known them to hire people right off the street at a good wage and provide expert training. We need more employers like that in Hants County.”

The investment, along with a $500,00 forgivable incentive, was made available through the Industrial Expansion Fund, which supports economic development in the province and is key in helping industries involved in innovation and technology while reducing air pollutants and greenhouses gases.
