Girls have a ball at N.S. championship
The girls’ softball team from Digby Regional High School proved they belonged at the provincial championships—but came away without a victory.
“But we had lots of fun,” said coach Amanda Deane.
She is happy with the team’s development over the season. The girls’ third-place finish at the regional championships in Bridgetown showed they belonged at the provincial tournament June 6-7 at Cape Breton Highlands Academy in Margaree Harbour.
But Deane said it was no surprise which team emerged as Nova Scotia champions.
The New Germany Saints trounced Digby 11-1 at the regional championship, and Deane ranked them as favorite in Cape Breton.
“They’re definitely the team to beat,” she said before the tournament.
At Margaree Harbour, the Saints went marching through their opponents without a close score.
“New Germany had an exceptionally great team,” Deane added.
Digby’s Lady Mariners fared much worse, losing both games on Friday to Inverness and Springhill.
A twilight game against Bridgewater was interrupted by darkness and finished Saturday morning. The loss forced Digby out of the tournament.
