St. Mary's Bay Academy held its annual sports banquet June 5 to honor student athletes with certificates of participation in school activities and award team medals.

Athletes, coaches and family members gathered in the school's cafeteria for the annual banquet followed by the awards ceremony.

Curling and wrestling coach Pete Comeau and graduating student Brian Johns were recipients of the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Awards.

Comeau received the NSSAF's outstanding service award in recognition of his contribution to school sports.

Johns received the exemplary participation award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to school sport.

Medals for most valuable, most improved and most sportsmanlike players were awarded in each of the sports teams at the school.

Highlighting the awards was the recognition of the teams and athletes that participated in Provincial championship play. Brian Johns led the senior boys’ basketball team to a bronze medal finish at provincials in March and was awarded the MVP medal.

Blake Doucette received the MIP medal and Robert Peters was awarded the sportsmanship medal for senior boys’ basketball.

Three track and field athletes advanced to Provincials after a successful performance at Regionals. Jordan Cromwell placed second in the regional high jump competition and was awarded the MIP medal.

Brandon Goudey placed fourth in the regional long jump and received the MVP medal.

Tara Thibault placed fourth in the shot put event at regionals and was awarded the sportsmanlike medal.

Track and field coach Sean Merrett congratulated the three athletes on their achievements.

"There was stiff competition in both the Districts and Regionals," said Merrett."To have three students representing our school at Provincials is remarkable. All three trained hard to achieve this."

Coaches were recognized for their time, energy and dedication so that student athletes would have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.
