Called off last weekend because of rain, the VON’s annual walkathon and duck race have been rescheduled for this Saturday (May 24).
Details regarding the activity schedule are basically the same as previously advertised.
Registration for the walk will begin at 9 a.m. on north Water Street, across from The Snack Place, with the walk itself getting underway at 10.
Participants will cover a five-kilometre route.
Entertainment and other activities, including a barbecue, are planned for after the walk, leading up to the duck race, will begin around noon.
People can purchase ducks for $10 apiece or three for $25 and entering the race makes participants eligible for prizes.
People who have yet to purchase ducks still will have a chance to do so Saturday morning but only until about 10 or 10:30.
The VON’s fundraising walk is an annual tradition that goes back nearly four decades.
The event used to draw hundreds of participants.
The numbers are much smaller these days and the VON remains grateful for those who continue to walk.
Heading into this year’s event, a local VON official indicated that there seemed to be new interest in the walk, hopefully a good sign for the future.
Money raised from the walkathon and the duck race will help the local VON with its various charitable programs, including volunteer visiting, community stroke support, palliative and supportive care volunteering and caregiver support.
Charitable dollars also are used to support the VON’s Meals in Minutes program and foot-care clinics.
