Roseway seeking doctor recruitment funding from municipalities

Severe competition for physicians in Nova Scotia has prompted those working towards recruiting some for Shelburne County to approach municipalities for funding assistance.
“On a regular basis we receive curriculum vitae’s from professional recruitment companies. If a physician is hired from one of these referrals the fee to the recruitment firm is $12,000 to $17,000,” wrote Dr. John Keeler, deputy chief of staff and Ms. Jodi Ybarra, Roseway Hospital site manager, in a recent letter to the Town of Clark’s Harbour.

“Unfortunately we are not able to accept c.v.’s on this basis for Shelburne as we have no way to pay the fee.”

The South West Health district does not have the resources to offer financial incentives to physicians, so Roseway is approaching municipal governments in the county for assistance.

To date, seven municipalities in the South West Health district have come on board with funding and are offering signing bonuses or return of service contracts to physicians who are recruited.

The Town of Clark’s Harbour council approved a motion to contact Keeler and Ybarra as well as the Municipality of Barrington to arrange for a meeting to discuss the issue further.
