Middleton is being awarded special recognition from the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Amanda Bent, district coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, said the Valley District Council nominated the community in appreciation of the support that has been shown by residents, businesses, service clubs and the town council.
“The Town of Middleton and its residents do more than just support Relay For Life,” she said. ”In April, the residents open their doors whenever a volunteer knocks, they purchase daffodils and they volunteer to raise funds.”
Bent said that Middleton has also shown leadership in advocating for change, and supporting people who are going through the experience of a cancer diagnosis.
“The Town of Middleton, its leadership and residents have made Middleton a champion community to help us work towards our mission,” she said. “One day we will reach our vision when no one will fear a cancer diagnosis.”
In June, Middleton will host its sixth Relay For Life. Bent said that it is apparent how everyone comes together that night to help celebrate the advances and support the courage of people living with cancer.
The council has also successfully nominated 14 Wing Greenwood for the Special Recognition Award.
During the last meeting of the Committee of the Whole on April 28, Mayor Calvin Eddy told council that the award is being presented in appreciation of the community’s efforts to raise thousands of dollars over the years.
“I think this is a great honour,” he said.
