The Rising Sun program will be offered in addition to the regular Christian camp programs at Camp Peniel, which was founded in 1961.
Executive director Christine Long says each day will hold something new and exciting for the challenged participants.
“Some examples are a Birthday Party Day, Pajama Day, The Wild West, Pirate Day and Campers Choice,” said Long.
The games and special events are the same as regular camps but “adapted” to the campers needs and desires. They include the 30’-foot Climbing Wall, the 35-foot Blob on the lake, a 65-foot Slip & Slide, a 100-foot Zip Line and swimming.
Long added that events are flexible and that each high-impact week will be centered on the personal needs of each camper. Pathfinder Ash Alsbassa will lead the group activities.
“The campers can be assured it will be a week that will bring memories that will last a lifetime,” she said.
The Rising Sun camp operates July 28 - August 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include crafts, games, food, challenges and more — all with a “buddy” to lend a hand.
Long says she heard about the program from Jon and Karen Trivers, directors of Acorn Farm Camp near Digby. When they closed their camp they provided funds from their non-profit organization Simple Gestures to four camps in the Maritimes to run the Rising Sun program. The seed money brings the cost of the program down to $50 for the week.
Promotional material has been sent to schools, churches, and centers that work with those with these abilities in Southwest Nova.
Some of the special considerations associated with the program are addressed by the buddy system.
“Each child and youth will have their own personal “buddy” to be with them throughout each day. They will help them with all the events,” said Long.
A nurse is on site and staff is trained as well in First Aid and CPR.
