Fire departments deal with grass, brush fires

Grass, brush and woods fires kept local firefighters busy last week. Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to a grass and woods fire on East Davidson Street in Robinson Corner Thursday afternoon, April 17 at 1:42 p.m.
MacLeod said the grass fire got into the woods and a total of eight or nine acres burned before firefighters extinguished it. The Greenwich Fire Department provided mutual aid.
Port Williams Fire Chief Philip Porter said his department was called to the scene of a small grass fire on the Starr’s Point Road Monday night, April 14.

Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley said his department responded to a small brush fire on Lockhart Mountain Road in Coldbrook Tuesday night, April 15, but it turned out to be a controlled burn.
The Canning Fire Department responded to a brush fire on the Baxter’s Harbour Road in Baxter’s Harbour Thursday, April 17. Deputy Chief Scott Cruickshank said the Department of Natural Resources attended the scene as well.
Canning firefighters responded to a grass and brush fire on Saxon Street in Upper Dyke Thursday evening, April 17. Cruickshank said it was a controlled burn, but the wind came up and the fire got away.
In other local fire news, Wolfville firefighters responded to the scene of a couch on fire on Fowler Street Monday, April 14 at 7:45 a.m.
Wolfville firefighters responded to what was called in as a structure fire on Main Street Monday, April 14 at 4:15 p.m. MacLeod said someone put hot ashes in a plastic garbage can and it ignited. Wooden siding on the house caught fire, but MacLeod said firefighters were able to stop it before the fire got into the walls.
Wolfville responded to a building alarm sounding on Harbourside Drive Tuesday, April 15 at 3:15 p.m.
Wolfville responded to a two-vehicle collision in Lower Wolfville Wednesday, April 16 at 4:02 p.m. MacLeod said firefighters cleaned up some fluid that spilled and assisted the RCMP with traffic control. There were no injuries.
New Minas firefighters responded to an alarm sounding at New Minas Court on Monday, April 14.
New Minas responded to the scene of a mini-barn on fire on Alders Avenue Extension Tuesday morning, April 15 at 4:30 a.m. Chief James Redmond said his department was called to the scene of a dumpster fire on Alders Avenue just 10 minutes later the same morning.
Kentville firefighters responded to the scene of a tractor-trailer sideways in the road on Highway 341 by the Ultramar Station Friday night, April 11 at around 10:30 p.m. Ripley said the tractor-trailer was full of gasoline and firefighters had to reroute traffic. A tow truck was needed to move the tractor-trailer.
Kentville responded to a car crash by the flashing light on Highway 359 in Steam Mill Saturday, April 12. Ripley said firefighters found a car in the ditch on arrival. There were no injuries.
Ripley said his department responded to a suspicious car fire Sunday morning, April 13. The car was being used to block the access to someone’s woodlot. The individual had apparently been experiencing problems with someone stealing wood.
