NSSBL to begin 30th season May 20

The Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League will enbark on its 30th season May 20, with the Kentville Wildcats playing their first game Wednesday, May 21 against Dartmouth.

Formed in 1977, the NSSBL has been a Nova Scotia summer staple every year since then with the exception of 1984 when there was no league. It has produced four national champions.

The Wildcats have been league members every year but 1984, 1988 and 1993, winning the national title in 1985 on their home field.

All five teams from the 2007 season – Dartmouth, the defending league champions; Halifax, Truro, Sydney and Kentville – return this season, with an added incentive.

With Dartmouth hosting the 2009 national senior baseball championship, the NSSBL will get two representatives at the tournament: the league champion (if not Dartmouth) as well as the host Moosehead Dry; or the league runner-up if Dartmouth should win.

Interleague play against the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League will continue in 2008, with New Brunswick hosting interleague games June 21-22 and Nova Scotia hosting July 12-13.

As well, the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia champions are scheduled to meet in a best-of-five series for the Maritime championship, with Nova Scotia hosting the first two games and the New Brunswick champion the remainder of the series.

Dartmouth, the 2007 NSSBL champions, will represent Nova Scotia at the 2008 national championship tournament Aug. 21-24 in Brandon, MB.
