Friends of Port Mouton Bay have released a detailed 43-page overview report to the federal authority handling the Port Mouton Bay file and an application by Aqua Fish Technologies of L’Etang, N.B. to install a 29-hectare salmon farm just west of Port Mouton Island.
The graphic filled, scientific report is available for download at
www.friendsofportmoutonbay.ca. It has also been sent to the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The report covers the area’s heritage and numerous reasons, in the organization’s opinion, why the proposed fishfarm would hurt the region’s eco-system and economy.
The report even includes previously unpublished federal Department of Fisheries records of lobster tagging and landings that were carried out in Port Mouton Bay in 1946-47.
The report was compiled by physical oceanographers. Ron Loucks and Ruth Smith using data compiled by members, fishermen and the community in general as well as their own research.
