Drug Labs Seminar

Methamphetamine and clandestine drug labs with the possible dangers that could concern responding fire departments was the topic presented at the Yarmouth Fire hall by H.R.M. firefighter Jim Gates on Thursday, March 27. The two-hour session (both oral and pictorial) gave the approximately 75 local volunteer firefighters an idea of potential dangers. Labs are not always located in run down structures but are found in vans, trucks etc. and now in upscale properties. He warned that responding firefighters need to be very alert as they approach a situation where a lab may be located, meth labs are very dangerous as statistics indicate. 20-80 per cent of injuries occur by explosion, 51 per cent of injuries to first responders, and 54 per cent are respiratory related. If inside be ready to exit quickly, don't touch anything, notify RCMP and be ready to assist and treat with first aid if necessary. The use of drugs was shown with pictures of users and what it does to them.

St. George Vet in Hospital

We were a bit late receiving the news that veteran F. Owen Nickerson was admitted to the Yarmouth Hospital with a heart problem. Hopefully ,Owen, you have returned home and, if not, you are on the road to recovery.

Rate Payers Meeting

The Lakes & District fire department will hold a ratepayers meeting at the Lake George fire hall at 7 p.m. on April 15.

League Playoffs

After walking away with the league title, Wedgeport got away with a sizeable lead in the

"A" Section semi-finals. A three week total pin fall affair. Results of the first week:

Wegeport 1664, East Pubnico 1588, Naiad 1489. The "B" Section semi-final, A two out of three series resulted in a Carleton #2 lead of 1423 over Salmon River - 1385, and Carleton #1 1539 over West Pubnico - 1345.

The "C" Section is a 4 of 7 final match between Neptune and Y.F.D. Ladies. The first week results have Neptune up one to nothing after a 1396-1268 match. Donald LeBlanc rolled a 149 single, Brian D'Eon a 361 triple for top honors.

Fire Service Association of Nova Scotia

The annual conference and semi-annual meeting take place on Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday April 27 at the Cole Harbour fire hall. The program is lined up as a Friday night get-together; on Saturday various speakers and the Fire Marshal's award dinner. Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. the semi-annual FSANS meeting takes place.





Date in History

April 18 1885 - A full rigged Brig tied up at Horton's wharf was badly damage by a fire in the cabin. As the fire was being extinguished one person fell through the wharf, but was not hurt. A second man blinded by smoke fell through an open hatch into the hold and was seriously injured. The Brig was from PEI and was towed to Yarmouth by the company's new tug build by Burrill-Johnson Iron Co.
